Across Centre Street is the main Upper School Campus including the Student Center, Wigglesworth & Warren Hall, the ACC gym, Strauss Library, the Chapel and 8 student dormitories. The Upper School is home to about 700 students. Of those students, 50% are boarding students and 50% are day students. Milton’s upper school student population comes from 28 states and 23 Countries with 14% international students and 43% students of color. The average Upper School class size is 14 students and they can choose from over 185 academic courses.

In grades 6–8, students focus on different aspects of performance arts. The grade 6 course focuses on public and impromptu speaking and storytelling. Students learn the skills necessary to write a demonstration speech and deliver their instructions efficiently. Students then move on to practice limited preparation speaking. Grade 7 performing arts is a stagecraft course; students build miniature models of sets and also prepare full-scale scenes for School shows. Grade 8 performing arts is a course on improvisation. Students script their own work and develop scenes based on themes of identity.


Milton Academy also offers a chorus course for singers; chorus members enjoy many opportunities to perform for their older and younger peers, faculty and parents at Milton Academy. Among other skills, chorus members learn note reading, ensemble technique and musical blend. In the sixth, seventh and eighth grade, students may take orchestra courses. These courses are performance-based, for musicians. Students may also choose a general music course, which delves further into music theory and history.

The primary mission of the William Coburn Cox Library is to stimulate the intellectual curiosity of the individual student and to enrich the educational environment of the School by providing a comprehensive and up-to-date resource center. Our goals are to support the academic curriculum with a carefully selected, well-balanced collection of traditional and electronic resources that offer access to information both within and outside of the library. Also, we aim to teach research skills and to support students in their research and to inspire creative and critical thinking. There is a dedicated middle school librarian, who works in concert with our teachers and supports students in research and book selection.

The Milton Mustangs compete on 12 fields, six wood courts, seven international squash courts, 17 hard surface tennis courts, a 200 x 90 foot ice rink, both indoor and outdoor tracks, a dedicated dual mat wrestling area, a nearby 6-lane competition swimming and diving pool, a ski area in the Blue Hills Reservation, and the greens of the Milton-Hoosic Golf Course.


Milton Academy has four athletic buildings on campus. Milton’s Athletic and Convocation Center (ACC) opened in 1998. Within it is the Fitzgibbons Convocation Center (south field house) that includes three basketball courts, an indoor track and convocation capacity for the entire School. The north field house includes a hockey rink or, when the ice is removed, three tennis courts or indoor practice space for field sports. The second floor of the ACC features the Esther and Herbert G. Stokinger ’24 Fitness Center, coaches’ offices and training rooms.

The Pritzker Science Center opened in 2011 and has transformed the department and the way our students experience science. The entryway houses a “Dashboard” that demonstrates real-time energy use and savings simultaneously, serving as a sustainability teaching tool for students. The building uses natural light extensively; sensors as well as manual controls regulate light for peak efficiency. Continuous filtration of roof water gathers, recharges and disperses rainwater to irrigate landscaping. Solar hot water and photovoltaic panels produce energy for the building.


The building boosts 14 class labs, one for each faculty member and his or her discipline. Scientific inquiry that is specialized or independent, or that needs to continue for longer periods of time, will take place in four inquiry labs. Larger than the classroom labs, the inquiry labs are on the first floor effectively locating the “cool stuff” in the center of activity.


To provide ultimate flexibility and prepare for potential new teaching strategies, several of the inquiry labs and the classroom labs are separated from one another by “garage door” type partitions. Those laboratories can double in size, allowing for variable uses of space. These great resources let Milton offer advanced classes like genetics or marine biology in the Upper School. In the entryway, there is a central gathering place, which invites students and faculty to relax, take a break from a project, and enjoy their connections with science.

The third-grade curriculum at Milton includes topics like the life cycles of plants and animals; environmental responsibility and stewardship; immigration and metropolises; and electrical circuits. Themes are incorporated across all subjects and in all project-based activities. A two-night stay at The Farm School in Athol, Massachusetts, along with caring for Milton’s own community garden, deepens students’ understanding of the natural world and our role in it. Students learn in depth about the expedition of Lewis and Clark; the life cycle of Monarch butterflies; and the development of cities.


During Grade 4, in social studies, students explore and understand prehistoric and ancient civilizations, and study the history of Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism and Islam. In math, students work toward a strong grasp of multiplication, and in science, they focus on physics, human anatomy and engineering. A “Living Arts” project requires them to research a particular artist and create artwork inspired by their subject. Fourth graders also hone public-speaking skills during presentations to the class.


In their final year in Greenleaf, Grade 5 students will investigate United States history, economics, civil rights, civil law and women’s suffrage. They explore geography and Greek mythology and culture. Students strengthen their independent writing skills, responsible for editing and revising their own work. They develop proficiency in persuasive writing, and they write and present poems to peers and parents. Students also begin using individual Chromebooks and are expected to manage much of their coursework using learning management software.

In grades 6–8, students focus on different aspects of performance arts. The grade 6 course focuses on public and impromptu speaking and storytelling. The Caroline Saltonstall Building is home to the Lower & Middle School Admission Office, Development Office & Business Office. It also houses many student spaces including the Lower School art room, gymnasium, library & the design thinking studio. This building stands on the original Milton Academy Girls’ School campus.

The Milton Mustangs compete on 12 fields, six wood courts, seven international squash courts, 17 hard surface tennis courts, a 200 x 90 foot ice rink, both indoor and outdoor tracks, a dedicated dual mat wrestling area, a nearby 6-lane competition swimming and diving pool, a ski area in the Blue Hills Reservation, and the greens of the Milton-Hoosic Golf Course.


Milton Academy has four athletic buildings on campus. Milton’s Athletic and Convocation Center (ACC) opened in 1998. Within it is the Fitzgibbons Convocation Center (south field house) that includes three basketball courts, an indoor track and convocation capacity for the entire School. The north field house includes a hockey rink or, when the ice is removed, three tennis courts or indoor practice space for field sports. The second floor of the ACC features the Esther and Herbert G. Stokinger ’24 Fitness Center, coaches’ offices and training rooms.

The Pritzker Science Center opened in 2011 and has transformed the department and the way our students experience science. The entryway houses a “Dashboard” that demonstrates real-time energy use and savings simultaneously, serving as a sustainability teaching tool for students. The building uses natural light extensively; sensors as well as manual controls regulate light for peak efficiency. Continuous filtration of roof water gathers, recharges and disperses rainwater to irrigate landscaping. Solar hot water and photovoltaic panels produce energy for the building.


The building boosts 14 class labs, one for each faculty member and his or her discipline. Scientific inquiry that is specialized or independent, or that needs to continue for longer periods of time, will take place in four inquiry labs. Larger than the classroom labs, the inquiry labs are on the first floor effectively locating the “cool stuff” in the center of activity.


To provide ultimate flexibility and prepare for potential new teaching strategies, several of the inquiry labs and the classroom labs are separated from one another by “garage door” type partitions. Those laboratories can double in size, allowing for variable uses of space. These great resources let Milton offer advanced classes like genetics or marine biology in the Upper School. In the entryway, there is a central gathering place, which invites students and faculty to relax, take a break from a project, and enjoy their connections with science.

The middle school years involve tremendous growth and change. We see curiosity, boundless energy, and increased sophistication inside and outside the classroom. Each day, our students take on more responsibility and independence; we understand them, support them, and help them grow as they transition from childhood to adolescence.


Milton Academy helps students take safe risks, pursue talents, and discover new passions. Our rigorous academics focus on skill development, hands-on learning, and interdisciplinary projects. Connections between students and adults, so important in adolescent years, are lively—in the classroom, and on the fields and stages. Students feel comfortable turning to their teachers, advisors or coaches for support and guidance. Our weekly community meetings provide leadership opportunities, celebrate individual and group success, and cultivate respect and responsibility. Milton’s Middle School faculty are devoted to their craft and eagerly evaluate and apply best practices in adolescent education. As a School, we are committed to continuous curriculum renewal, so that our work meets the needs of and excites our students.

The outdoor area behind the Junior Building boasts a large playground, a sandbox, and space for children to run and play, as well as the community garden. Children in grades K-3 have a dedicated time in the garden every week, learning about environmental science with the garden as their natural laboratory. Our dining halls will also feature fresh produce from the garden, for students and teachers to enjoy.

The third-grade curriculum at Milton includes topics like the life cycles of plants and animals; environmental responsibility and stewardship; immigration and metropolises; and electrical circuits. Themes are incorporated across all subjects and in all project-based activities. A two-night stay at The Farm School in Athol, Massachusetts, along with caring for Milton’s own community garden, deepens students’ understanding of the natural world and our role in it. Students learn in depth about the expedition of Lewis and Clark; the life cycle of Monarch butterflies; and the development of cities.


During Grade 4, in social studies, students explore and understand prehistoric and ancient civilizations, and study the history of Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism and Islam. In math, students work toward a strong grasp of multiplication, and in science, they focus on physics, human anatomy and engineering. A “Living Arts” project requires them to research a particular artist and create artwork inspired by their subject. Fourth graders also hone public-speaking skills during presentations to the class.


In their final year in Greenleaf, Grade 5 students will investigate United States history, economics, civil rights, civil law and women’s suffrage. They explore geography and Greek mythology and culture. Students strengthen their independent writing skills, responsible for editing and revising their own work. They develop proficiency in persuasive writing, and they write and present poems to peers and parents. Students also begin using individual Chromebooks and are expected to manage much of their coursework using learning management software.
